Diego Olivero’s glass sculptures inspired by India

Having toured the world for most of the past decade, Diego Olivero is no stranger to the beauty of indigenous handicrafts. Be it the metal and clay work of Honduras, the natural fibres and ceramics of the Philippines, or Madagascar’s gorgeous raffia—the award-winning Guatemalan designer has dipped his toes in a myriad artistic mediums. Adding to his bevy of worldly adventures, Olivero’s latest offering, Kaanch, a collection of 11 one-of-a-kind glass lamps and vessels, was not only inspired by India but was also crafted in collaboration with 15 skilled artisans from New Delhi, whom Olivero discovered over the years at several exhibitions and trade shows.

“India’s unique blend of chaos and stillness fuelled my fascination and motivated me to express my love for the country through my work,” says Olivero. “Working with these talented artisans enabled me to push the boundaries of glass manufacturing and explore new artistic possibilities.” The pieces from the collection are at once contemporary and traditional: minimalistic fixtures in heat resistant borosilicate, punctuated by colourful curves. They call to mind the very fabric of India’s diverse lands—filled with both uninhabited plains and colourful little settlements, bustling with energy.
